GIS Services

What is Geographic Information Systems (GIS)?

A geographic information system (GIS) integrates hardware, software, and data for capturing, managing, analyzing, and displaying all forms of geographically referenced information. GIS allows us to view, understand, question, interpret, and visualize data in many ways that reveal relationships, patterns, and trends in the form of maps, globes, reports, and charts.

A Geographic Information System  helps you answer questions and solve problems by looking at your data in a way that is quickly understood and easily shared.

What is geographic data?

The best way to describe geographic data is to have you look around outside.  Just about everything you see (and some things you don’t see) can be considered geographic data; roads, fire hydrants, buildings, anything with a “place” on the earth.  Of course there are things that you don’t see like city, state, or voting district boundaries that can be captured on a map as well.

What can GIS do for me?

GIS allows you to take this geographic data and track, manage, organize and ask questions/get answers you can’t get with a plain old spreadsheet.  And you use GIS everyday!  Have you ever gotten directions from Google, MapQuest or some other device?  Then you have used GIS because the roads in that website or device are considered “geographic data” and the software uses this data to know what your best route is.
